Extraordinary read about Extraordinary men May 26, 2004 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Probably one of the most humbling, interesting, and down-to-earth books that I have ever read. It is very cut and to the point with none of the wishy washy fillers that other literates try and throw at you. Get a hold of this book ASAP.

Answering Questions I Never Asked November 29, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My father was a member of UDT-R Class 29. I've always known he was a SEAL, and have met the men he served with. But he doesn't talk about it. Not the way John does here. Thank you, Mr. Roat, for answering questions I've never asked, and maybe opening a channel so my siblings and I can learn more about my father - the man he is today was formed in many ways the day he started UDT.

This is a very well written account of a Navy man's training and experiences as one of the first SEALs. Even if you're not a fan of military history, the comradery and friendships that Roat describes the development of make this a great read. Although Roat's training took place quite awhile ago, it seems that the SEALs have stuck with many of the same training methods up to today. This book explains exactly what a SEAL is beyond the gear and uniform. It gets at the mentality of the elite soldiers and how they function. Overall, a great book.

I dive with John and didn't know he could write. His book gave me a few laughs and a new appreciation of our Navy SEALs. All I can say is READ IT!
