5 out of 5 stars Good Introductory Book   December 18, 2008

This is a great first book to help with digital photography. This book is not overwhelming like many books out there that try to be a complete photography course and end up overwhelming the reader. The information is given in short chunks that can be easily digested. This makes it easy to take it a piece at a time if you need to. It also introduces some of the necessary information and terminology that is essential to digital photography. This includes formats - TIFF, RAW, and JPEG. Other topics include Exposure, Light, and Composition. Scattered throughout the book are assignments that will help you use the information that is presented. There is no better way to help crystalize a concept than using it. This will help the user understand, remember, and know when to use the information. As you grow as a photographer you will want other books that are more detailed and specific toward the area that interests you. But this is a great place to start. The author runs BetterPhoto.com which offers on line photography classes that have multiple instructors and I can highly recommend.

Jim in the owner of Better [...] where I been a member for over four years. It my favorite site on the internet.

I bought the book (The Better Photo Guide to Digital Photography) and it wonderful.

The book has a chapters on getting to know your camera, idea's for what to shoot, talks about exposures, light and composition and also has assignments you can do in the book.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about digital photography. It a great book.

Jim's book is very well written and easy to understand.

4 out of 5 stars Assignments were very helpful   December 18, 2008

I have read several digital photo instruction books. What set this one apart (in addition to being very readable) was the assignments given in each chapter. With photography you learn by doing and it was helpful to have something specific to do to make sure that you understood the lesson. I recommend this book for anyone with a digital camera (especially an SLR) who is tired of being controlled by the camera (shooting only in automatic mode). Read this book and start using all those extra settings that make photography fun and creative!

5 out of 5 stars Simplicity, clarity and wisdom in an inexpensive package   December 18, 2008

There are so many books on digital photography that it's difficult to know which one to buy or recommend for individuals new or relatively new to digital photography. In our new photo club geared mostly to folks with PNS cameras and a few with SLRs, this book has been very helpful. It provides clear, succint, step by step instructions without unnecessary jargon, is easy to read, and is very well illustrated. We liked the book so much that we have adopted it as a class text to work through from cover to cover. The sections on exposure and composition are particularly helpful for both newcomers and amateurs alike.

The BetterPhoto Guide to Digital Photography book by Jim Miotke is helpful to me and easy to follow. He tells what he thinks and then shows you the steps and setting he takes. I especially like the assignments as it makes me stop and think about my settings before I take the photos. This is the second book I have purchased by him, the other one was Digital Nature Photography. I have also given this book as a gift to my brother who is new to photography.
