Enthusiastically recommended for knitters of every level of ability and proficiency November 8, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Have you received, given or heard of a prayer shawl? Would you like to know how to make one and understand the meanings behind them? Needlecraft authors and founders of the Prayer Shawl Ministry, Janet Bristow and Victoria A. Cole-Galo have collaborated to bring aspiring knitters thirty-eight distinctive and lovely prayer shawl patterns to knitters of all skill levels in the pages of "The Prayer Shawl Companion: 38 Knitted Designs To Embrace, Inspire & Celebrate Life". Beautiful pictures, easy to follow patterns, and anecdotal personal stories make "The Prayer Shawl Companion" so much more than just another book of patterns. Readers will learn the meaning and traditions behind many kinds of shawls showcased, as well as the importance of these shawls to those who make them and/or receive them. These wraps are made for anyone and for nearly any occasion. The individual and 'user friendly' patterns include designs for celebrations as well as times of solace and remembrance. Readers can find more information, stories and patterns on www.shawlministry.com. Thoughtful, inspiring, and educational knitters will enjoy selecting the right color, yarn and stitch for their project, each with its own meaning. A welcome addition to personal, professional, and community library Needlecraft instructional reference collections, "The Prayer Shawl Companion" is enthusiastically recommended for knitters of every level of ability and proficiency.
Great Patterns November 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Can't wait to get started on one of the patterns in this book! Nice variety! Good background on the Prayer Shawl ministry and ideas to get started. Even has a pattern for a tallis (Jewish prayer shawl)!
Touched by these angels November 3, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have just received this book in the mail as a gift from my father - and have been overwhelmed with emotion ever since. You see, unbeknownst to me, there is one excerpt in the book written by my mother's best friend in honor of her. Janet Bristow and her group, that included Ginny Owens, bestoyed the gift of a prayer shawl to my mother Cyndee as she went through chemo the first time. This was a gift that truly paid itself forward 1,000-fold. My mother was so inspired, that despite fighting breast cancer, she went on to knit hundreds of blankets for friends, family and strangers alike for the next 9 years. She taught me to knit and to do the same. Inspired friends of my mother's began to do so, some even forming groups. The next thing you know, lives around the world were touched by one simple gift. This book encapsulates both the beauty and the power of these shawls, and inspires even the timid knitter to knit, because the importance of the gift will overshadow the strength of the knot. Thank you to Vicky & Janet for touching so many lives before now, and countless more that will be touched for reading this book, receiving it as a gift, or entering the community of other prayer shawl users & makers.
people do care for others November 2, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book warms your heart. Reading about the spirituality behind each shawl and indiviual's stories left me with a feeling of peace. I have taken up knitting again so I too can make shawls for my friends, using this book as my guide. I am buying Prayer Shawl Companion as Xmas gifts, share it with a friend. Jackie Schechter

I have known Janet and Vicky for years, knitting prayer shawls for friends and those in need, i have several, all blessed with love and thought that can only come from those who can give. My copy of The Prayer Shawl Companion sits on my living room table, picked up and thumbed through by knitters and those who just love to read in awe the stories and pictures within. read it, share it, love it.
