Dialogue is so bad, I couldn't finish the book!! December 18, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
In this story, everyone has a sarcastic or smart answer to EVERY question, statement or to anything boring thing that happens in the book. For some reason the author decided his characters, all of them, are people that have to say everything they think. It's so ridiculous, nobody talks like that. Th dialogue read like a play script. BAD, BAD, BAD. I had to stop at the point where this one character kept talking about how much he loved to eat and they all responded with some ridiculous remarks, over and over again, everytime he/they ate, it was the same thing. If you want a REAL novel, read Dan Simmons (The Crook Factory, Hyperion, Hard Case, etc.)!
If Military Science Fiction has a menu... December 14, 2008 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
...this book is the Kid's Meal.
Lightweight science, philosophy, dialogue, plot.
After Pournelle, Drake, Haldeman and Heinlein, this is pitiful stuff.
If you're looking for purely entertaining space opera, look up Bujold.
The Heinlein quote on the cover suckered me in; won't happen twice.
Unique and enjoyable read December 9, 2008 Scalzi has produced a great blend of science fiction and action while keeping the people at the forefront of the story.
For me, the human aspect really makes the story as 75 year old from earth leave their lives behind for a vague notion of war and youth. The interaction of the people as they move through processing and into battle is what really makes the story. The author has taken an idea, made it seem plausible and dared you to dream about the possibilities.
This is the first book I have ready by John Scalzi, but I will be reading the next two books in the series soon.
The Ghost Brigades The Last Colony
SF the way it used to be December 6, 2008 Tired of the endless stream of fantasy novels? Wizards, Elves and sorcerers are not for you? You just found the solution. Scalzi pictures a technical future where people really fight, for the survival of mankind no less. And where evil people are just that. Ok, we're not there yet, it takes a stretch of imagination, but then, the F in SF means fiction. For me this book is an absolute must-have as a light, enjoyable page-turner. There is only one downside: you may lose sleep if you buy it.
THE ABSOLUTE BEST!! December 4, 2008 I plan to review only what I like the best or the least----and this is one of the best ever.
I was hooked from the first page and found myself wanting to play hooky so I could go read. Scalzi must have a heck of a college degree becuz he anticipated tiny details of what life might be like 200 years from now. And you just gotta love the characters. You didn't want any of them to die, they were written so good.
The main guy is 75 when he joins the colonial forces and we follow him through the process of getting a new body and training. Then we follow him and his freinds into the far vaster universe than we ever imagined. It is great and will appeal to readers of every age becuz the interactions are so human and real.
I felt about this book, the same way I felt about FOUNDATION and LORD OF THE RINGS. It is that good!
