5 out of 5 stars An Incredible Roller Coaster of Inspirational Stories   October 3, 2001

Col Jeff takes the reader on an incredible roller coaster of emotions that depict military life through the eyes of faith. He conveys the tough reality of life, where God doesn't always deliver people from the circumstances. Instead, he shows how these men and women, through their faith in Christ were kept even through their circumstances (POW's, Traumatically wounded GI's etc). This is a must read for those looking for encouragement and hope when our nation is sorely in need of it.

3 out of 5 stars Shelve it in the Amen Corner of the library.   September 29, 2001

For three-hundred years following the life of Jesus, it was nearly unthinkable for a Christian to become a soldier, much less participate in war. Then, Christianity gained control of the Roman Empire & its legions. Justification for Pax Romana was needed, & Augustine provided it with his "just war" requirements. There has been no war in history which has met all of those requirements.

Perhaps the most significant "military moment with God" occurred when a junior officer in the Roman Army, his name was Martin from Tours, put down his weapons the day before a battle, offering instead to stand, defenseless except for a Cross, between the opposing armies. Fortunately, a truce was worked out that night.

There is more truth to that story than to the one in this book recounting in detail the meeting between Big Chief George Washington & the Big Chief of the native American warriors, formerly allied with the French, who had wiped out half of young Washington's command & nearly killed the future Father of Our Country.

This is how what should be an accurate, dispassionately written book, in which authentic spiritual experiences stirringly speak for themselves, becomes historically suspect. Too bad.

As for there being "no atheists in foxholes," my brother steadfastly maintains that he remained one during his year in & around Pleiku. The nearness of death does not inspire religious faith in everyone. Sometimes there's only terror followed by resignation.

5 out of 5 stars A Time for Patiotism   September 26, 2001

In a time of renewed patiotism, Col. O'Leary's book is a timely release. It poignent words of inspiration have gripped the hearts of readers all across the United States. Now, more than ever, Americans believe in the heroism of the public servant. The Colonel, the Marine Recon., the naval captain, and even the military family. This is a collection of unforgettable memoirs of our modern-day heros. The brave men (and women) who have been to Hell and back, living to tell the story of the people (and the God) that led them through. It is a book encouraging renewed strength and belief in "One nation, under God, Indivisible... With Liberty and Justice... For all."

5 out of 5 stars Taking the High Ground   August 23, 2001
This is one of the most inspirational books I have ever read. Once I started reading "Taking the High Ground" I did not want to put it down until I was finished. It is a book for everyone of all ages and backgrounds. My eleven year daughter read "Taking the High Ground" and she too enjoyed this book. Col O'Leary did a fabulous job. I am looking forward to his next book when it comes out.
