I cannot understand why so many people like this book. I guess there's more hunger for tired cliches than I had expected. The main character lacks any character flaws and is so obnoxiously virtuous that he is difficult to relate to. The story is mildly entertaining until the end when it veers into the ridiculous.

If you liked this book, I appreciate your open-mindedness in reading this negative review. Also, a negative review can be helpful. I'll say this. It was an entertaining read, but--
I enjoyed the first part of this morality tale (follow your dreams, a good message). But--but it was so bound up in the literal belief in omens. It is one thing to take opportunities, be daring, and strike out in new directions, but to march humanity back into the dark ages is something else.
Hundreds of thousands of innocent people have died because of the belief in omens and other superstitions. The author of this book never addressed that essential question.
I agree that we should follow our dreams, but this parable went too far overboard.
I have traveled by bus and jeep across North Africa, and through Egypt and down through the Sudan, Ethiopia, and I can promise you that Mr. Coelho has romanticized nomadic life way out of realistic proportions.
Also, the ending is old and predetermined from the beginning. The boy goes out searching for his dream and found it was back home all along. As a story, I would give it a higher rating, but the author really didn't deal with the hard problems of life.
One critic said the "Little Prince" was a lot better.

With so many reviews(1,299 and counting) there is little to add for recommending this book. What I don't understand is why there are so many haters? This is a book of fables that has a positive message. Seek your personal legend, be the best you can be, don't be afraid to take chances and enjoy the ride good or bad , in your quest in life. This beautifully simply written book is not fitting or worthy of disparaging remarks. I was given this book to read with love and in turn gave it to someone I love to read. The circle is complete for now until someone else is given this exqusite book of truths that carry a powerful message to read. Recommended for seekers of truth and light but not for those who drink haterade.

...taught you rolled into 208 pages. A light read, nothing Earth shattering. A long way to travel for the lesson learned. But sometimes we must come full circle.

I just completed reading the book "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. It is a very well written novel about the journey of a shepherd boy towards a treasure. The author has given lot of emphasis about the obstacles he faces and the help he gets along the journey. It ends with how the boy attains his treasure with the help of the omens and some persons he meets along the way.
Anyone can relate the incidents in the novel to that of their travel towards destination in personal life. The book is written in a very simple language and provides lot of insight into the life lessons to be learnt. I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this amazing book. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in meaningful fictions.
