Excellent Bit of Our Proud American History June 6, 2010 Robert Flagg (Plano, Texas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The reason I purchased this book was to learn more about the uniforms worn by my patriot ancestors and their compatriots in the Revolutionary War. I am a member of the Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard and I wear my blue coat with red trim and brass buttons with pride along with my white vest with small brass buttons, white pants, white knee socks, and black shoes with big brass buckels all topped off by my tricorn hat.
Along with illustrations of uniforms worn by our Continental Army are uniforms worn by the British, French, Germans, Spanish, and the native Indians who fought on both sides as did also the African Americans. Included are many illustrations in full color of both uniforms and other items of use such as artillery. This book is an entertaining experience in learning much of our American history in interesting detail. I reccommend it for all proud Americans. Sorry I was not able to include a photo of me in my SAR Color Guard uniform.

Enjoyed all of the pictures
Excellent introduction ... NOT an Encyclopedia ! April 26, 2010 J&K (Vermont) This is a wonderful reference work - with interesting background information and excellent color uniform drawings.
The uniform drawings are numerous and fill the book. The text is extensive, interesting yet basic information. All nations participating are covered including Spanish troops in the Indies.
The drawback is that this is not a true 'encyclopedia' or super detailed reference. If you were looking for the variations in uniforms worn by say each Massachusetts line regiment - this is not the book for you. You will get representations of several Massachusetts line regiments along with some description .......but far from exhaustive coverage.
For the hobbyist, wargamer, uniform enthusuiast or Revolution War 'fan' this is a wonderful and very price worthy addition to a library. Just DO NOT go into it thinking it is the definitive encyclopedia on ALL Revolutionary War uniforms. It is fun, well written, beautifully illustrated and an excellent introductory guide that will suffice for all except the real devotee. WELL worth the price....
Excellent uniform resource April 18, 2010 Paul Collins (Indio CA US) Although much of the information provided is brief, this book still serves as a good primer of the uniforms for all sides in the AWI. The only real shortcoming is that some descriptions don't match the color illustrations and, although there was a good deal of variation in uniforms during the war, there is no explanation as to why these particular variances appear.

If you are interested in the individual uniforms that individual units and soldiers wore in the American War of Independence this is the book for you. Well researched and well illustrated. I recommend.
