Product Description A brutal, action-packed account of the sea battles of the Napoleonic War by the author of the bestselling Nelsons Trafalgar
Roy Adkins (with his wife Lesley) returns to the Napoleonic War in The War for All the Oceans, a gripping account of the naval struggle that lasted from 1798 to 1815, a period marked at the beginning by Napoleons seizing power and at the end by the War of 1812. In this vivid and visceral account, Adkins draws on eyewitness records to portray not only the battles but also the details of a sailors lifeshipwrecks, press-gangs, prostitutes, spies, and prisoners of war.
The War for All the Oceans is epic narrative history sure to appeal to fans of Patrick OBrian and C. S. Forester, as well as all readers of military and social history.

The War for all the Oceans August 20, 2010 paul (Seattle, wa.) I ordered this book expecting a 10,000 foot overview/ linear history of the british naval wars. It was not the overview I would have liked, but that lack was more than offset by the extensive use of first hand contemporary diary accounts. You are placed on the deck in the middle of the action. The gory details of combat reality emphasize the suffering of those who have gone before us. This will make a fantastic companion book to a dry linear naval history book.
Expands my understanding August 16, 2010 amania After reading MRS ADAMS IN WINTER following Louisa Adams journey (in 1815) from St Petersburg to Paris THE WAR FOR ALL OCEANS provides an expanding knowledge of the chaos that Napoleon created and how, finally, he was stopped.Takes a while to read but I'm not skipping any of it so it must be a "good read"
Good for those that actually care about the subject June 24, 2010 R. A. Lee (Greenville, SC) Most are not going to want to troll the large multivolume histories available that extensively go through the subject of the british navy during the napoleonic wars. this is perfect for those that are used to reading primary source driven narrative but do not want to read 7 volumes of it. The reason i think that adkins skips trafalger is that basically it was a simple battle. people have made too much of the complexity of a battle that was decided by an admiral's straight forward charge. the affect afterwards is more important in an overall naval history of this period. I read this and liked the book because I love the napoleonic era but had not heard many of the anecdotes.
A Bit Not Mentioned November 1, 2009 JGC1010 (A Gentleman in Maryland) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm up to page 346 now, the year is 1809, and this history of the naval war against Napolean has yet to mention the shipboard mutinies at Spithead and the Nore which occured in 1797. I referred to Spithead in the index, and the last page to mention it was page 285. The Nore is not listed in the index. Long live super-patiotism, I guess.
Dry & hard to read September 26, 2009 Cy Young 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
Interesting subject, but a slow, dry read. It makes extensive use of quotations from original sources - which lends to the period flavor, but makes reading hard. Good for reference source - difficult for general reading. I'm donating the book to the library instead of keeping in my personal collection - the bottom line is I can't imagine ever re-reading it.
