5 out of 5 stars Plenty of Historical Information and Black & White Photos   October 12, 2008
From front jacket:

"To mark the bicentennial of the University of Georgia, F.N. Boney has assembled almost 300 photographs, many never before published. This rich and varied collection illustrates both daily life and extraordinary events over the past two centuries.

In the pages of this volume the reader will find familiar landmarks like Old College, New College, and the Chapel as they looked in the 19th century, when the grass on campus grew knee high. Here are scenes very few living alumni will remember: the Ivy Building and the Library Building before they were linked to form the Academic Building; a student's room in a boardinghouse in 1893; baseball games being played on Herty Field, behind New College; downtown Athens as seen from campus, with horses drinking at a trough and a streetcar rounding the corner of College and Broad.

There are photographs of all phases of student life from before the turn of the century. Then, as always, students loved all-night poker games, fraternity parties, and football. They also liked pushball, an odd game played with a ball far larger than the players, and they had a boat crew, which must have practiced on the Oconee. The book also includes photographs that will remind many alumni of their own college days: the freshman shirttail parade, a formal dance held during World War II, a Demosthenian debate, the Co-op, fraternity and sorority rush, the anti-war demonstrations of the early 1970s."

5 out of 5 stars Execellent book   July 25, 2008
This book is full of HISTORY about UGA. It has more than you might expect. From old pictures and blueprints of the original grounds to current architecture. Lots of things you might not know about the origins of the school, how it survived the civil war, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Very solid contribution to Georgia history   April 26, 2004

I highly recommend this book. A little dry in spots but I liked it overall. It really adds to my collection. I recommend also "A Tailgater's Guide To SEC Football" for die-hard alumni and fans of football. It is an engaging read about not only Ga. but the entire conference.
