Product Description
Jonathan Jay Pollard, an intelligence analyst working in the U.S. Naval Investigative Services Anti-Terrorist Alert Center, systematically stole highly sensitive security secrets from almost every major intelligence-gathering agency in the United States. Over the course of eighteen months in the mid 1980s, he took and subsequently sold to Israel more than one million pages of classified material, enough to fill a six-by-ten-foot room stacked six feet high. No other spy in the history of the United States has stolen so many secrets, so highly classified, in such a short period of time. Ronald J. Olive, the author of this book was the assistant special agent in charge of counterintelligence in the Washington office of the Naval Investigative Service who led the whirlwind investigation against Pollard. Olive interrogated Pollard and garnered the confession that led to his arrest in November 1985 and eventual life sentence.

During the twenty plus years that Pollard has spent in prison, many questions have arisen about the case because it never went to trial and so much information surrounding it remains classified. Most of the books and articles that have been written about Pollard denounce his life sentence as unjust.

This book tells the other side of the story. It is an account from deep inside the espionage investigation that gives details of Pollards confession immediately following his arrest and describes Pollards interaction with the author before and during the time suspicion about his activities was mounting. Revealed are countless other details that have never before been made public. Calling the Pollard story an extreme case of a counterintelligence failure, Olive writes that mistaken assumptions and leadership failures enabled Pollard to ransack Americas defense intelligence long after he should have been fired. The author hopes the vital insights his book offers will serve as a lesson in history and prevent similar problems in the future and provide an antidote to the uncertainty that has fueled speculation, rumor, and lies surrounding the Pollard case.

5 out of 5 stars A Truthful and Insightful Look at One of our Most Damaging Spies Ever   November 5, 2008
Ron Olive has done an amazing job portraying the horrible and really unbelievable mistakes that led to Jonathan Pollard being able to harm our nation. Mr. Olive is not only a great writer and orator, but a true expert in the field of Counterintelligence. Whether you are a regular joe, a graduate student in the field of national security, or a government policy maker trying to catch those who wish to harm us, this book is a must read to inform you of how the bureaucracy can work against us allowing our enemies to prosper. If it were not for the tenacity and internal fortitude of CI officers like Mr. Olive, spies would run rampant in this country. Mr. Olive has created a fine piece of work and continues to serve our country as a dedicated servant in the field of CI and for that we owe him a debt of gratitude.

5 out of 5 stars Olive's Conclusions Are Right On The Mark   October 29, 2008

Olive's first-hand account of the treason committed by Jonathan Pollard was not only intriguing but enlightening. As a student of the field, I found the step-by-step description of the investigation and the techniques employed by the US government to be extremely helpful for someone like myself, who is interested in pursuing a career in national security. In addition, Olive's conclusions and the resulting sentence handed down to Pollard seem to be spot-on and appropriate given the fact that Pollard stole over 1 million pages of secret and top-secret information and sold them to Israel, all the while being unrepentant for his actions against the United States. I would recommend this inside account of "spy catching" to anyone who is interested in learning more about the techniques used by those who spend their careers trying to protect the rest of us. Too often is the case that "traitors among us" get off with a proverbial "slap on the wrist." Some think Pollard is being too harshly punished by receiving a life sentence for his spying, despite it being done for an ally; personally, I think he got off lightly.

5 out of 5 stars Complaciency Is Fatal To America   February 20, 2008

Mr. Olive's book on Capturing Jonathan Pollard is a "five star" - no doubt. To me, a 34 year law enforcement/intelligence officer, I believe this book should be required reading by every rookie police or military intelligence person.

Mr Olive clearly lays it out - complaciency on the part of the American people is a fatal disease. Worse yet, many of our top level administrators in the law enforcement and intelligence field took so long to get to their high positions that they have forgotten what really goes on at the operational level.

I hope Ron Olive writes another book (or three)

5 out of 5 stars Great book about a true story.   December 18, 2007
After reading this book, you will really wonder about how our so called intelligence agencies can manage anything. The amount of incompetence and negligence detailed in this book is almost unimaginable. Overall a good and interesting book. Recommended for those spy book lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Account   November 1, 2007

Ron Olive presents a well-written, factual and objective account of Jonathan Pollard's perfidy. This book is well organized and fast-paced. Mr. Olive does not spare criticism of the agencies and individuals who must bare much of the responsibility for the complete lack of or breakdown in security. Israel continues to exemplify that countries do not have friends, only national interests.

Unfortunately, there are supporters of Jonathan Pollard who attack the messenger rather than accept the message. Mr. Olive's account of Pollard's espionage is a continuation of Olive's outstanding service to our country. Those who support Pollard do a great injustice to U.S. - Israeli relations, by continuing to remind us that even those countries heavily supported by America, can bite the providers hand. This book is a textbook for all who study international relations, national security, counterintelligence, and counterespionage.

The full amount of damage inflicted by Pollard will not be known for years. Pollard clearly deserves his sentence and should never be released.
