Amazon.com Review Cavalry officer Slavomir Rawicz was captured by the Red Army in 1939 during the German-Soviet partition of Poland and was sent to the Siberian Gulag along with other captive Poles, Finns, Ukranians, Czechs, Greeks, and even a few English, French, and American unfortunates who had been caught up in the fighting. A year later, he and six comrades from various countries escaped from a labor camp in Yakutsk and made their way, on foot, thousands of miles south to British India, where Rawicz reenlisted in the Polish army and fought against the Germans. The Long Walk recounts that adventure, which is surely one of the most curious treks in history.
Product Description The harrowing true tale of escaped Soviet prisoners’ desperate march out of Siberia, through China, the Gobi Desert, Tibet, and over the Himalayas to British India.

The Long walk: I just couldnt stop reading it July 26, 2010 S. Telan This was a truly compelling story. The main character rises to the occasion and beats this challenge successfully. You never get the sense that there is pride getting in the way of the circumstances. The story is told fully yet it is not overdone. This guy wrote the book at the repeated urging not only of friends who knew him well and his pain but also at the express direction of his doctor who told him it might help exorcise some of his demons. He teamed up with a British journalist who developed a sufficiently trusting relationship with the Polish-born author to get him to open up and talk. This author didn't do it for the money. The writer basically has made very little on the book over the years. It is still not a widely known book and no one has ever made a movie of it. It had a small printing and then after many years became sort of an underground classic. I think anyone would like this book. If you are human and have friends and can relate to others, you are going to identify with one or another of the primary characters and will quickly become spellbound. Let's never forget these poor souls who fell victim to Stalin's gulag. It's the least we can do for them - the living and those they buried along their escape route together. This was a moving and profound true story and I didn't want the book to end. A story of ordinary human beings reaching into the innermost recesses of their being to do extraordinary things in order to survive. I felt like one of their close traveling companions and rooted and felt deeply for them at every difficult step of their way. In this book you will share their joys and their sorrows, seeing life through their eyes. Does every chapter or sentence convey a horrible or sad experience? Not at all. There are humorous moments which are all the more touching because they illustrate humanity's ability to laugh and play and be silly in the gravest of circumstances. These people were heroes. And they could have been you or me. I think one challenge any writer would face in relating such a tale is to do so without making oneself the leader or the center of the group. In short, without making oneself into some kind of hero or superman.
Great story about an incredible journey June 23, 2010 Tad L. Scales (Moraga, California) Amazing journey as measured by geography, emotional, spiritual and humanity. It is amazing what the human body and spirit can endure and yet, remain empathetic and caring. As westerners we are not exposed to such things unless we have traveled and this book is indeed a journey well worth the read!
One of the best! June 18, 2010 S. Griffith (San Francisco, CA) I have had this book for about 35 years. Got it from a "throw away bin" at the public library. It is an amazing book & my whole family has read it at least twice & some of us even more. It was not given any promotion & could hardly be found in the library & that is such a shame. The author did a wonderful job of describing the hardships & the good times.
Used Book May 31, 2010 Brenda When purchasing this used book, the condition was "Great Condition". Does great condition mean missing pages? The book skips pages, has pages missing and looks like it was taken apart and put back together again in the binding.
Its unfortunate that I paid expediting shipping to get it here in a hurry for my teenage son who needed to do a book report on it of school and he couldn't even use it.
I will never purchase from this seller again.
An amazing escape May 29, 2010 Richard T. Richmond (Belleville, IL) This is a mind-boggling true story of what men will go through to reach freedom.
