Product Description
In March of 2003, when Operation Iraqi Freedom was only days old, world headlines were made when a U.S. army convoy was attacked in the city of An-Nasiriyah en route to Baghdad. Several soldiers were killed and others were taken prisoner.

Jessica Lynch became the face and name associated with this tragedy, but another female soldier, Shoshana Johnson, was also wounded and captured in the ambush. A video of Shoshana being interrogated by her captors was soon broadcast on Spanish-language television and then picked up by American media. Shoshana had become the first black female prisoner of war in United States history. She was held for twenty-two days.

When Shoshana returned to the United States, she received numerous awards for her valor, including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Prisoner of War medals. She appeared on news networks and national television shows such as Oprah, Ellen, The Tonight Show, and Larry King Live, but she was bound by a military gag order. She was unable to discuss what really happened in Iraq -- until now.

Shoshana holds nothing back in this harrowing account of an ordinary woman caught in an extraordinary circumstance. She reveals decisions made by higher-ups that may have led to the capture, describes the pain of post-traumatic stress disorder, and shares the surprising story of how a specialist in a maintenance company ended up on the front lines of war.

Divulging personal emotions and frustrations while raising fresh political issues, I'm Still Standing is the never-before-told and much anticipated story of the headline-making ambush, capture, and rescue described with the exceptional bravery and candor of a single mom and soldier who became an American hero.

5 out of 5 stars a unique memoir   June 22, 2010

A very interesting memoir. Her story is unique and I enjoyed her honest approach to relaying her take on what happened. I'm glad she was talked into writing this and hope that she finds peace in her life in the aftermath of this ordeal.

5 out of 5 stars A truly awesome book   May 14, 2010

Johnson's story of her life in the Army, her capture when ambushed with the 507th Maintenance and her ordeal as a POW are presented in this book in a well-written and absorbing account. She discusses what led up to the 2003 disaster which left many of her fellow Soldiers killed and others in captivity. She pulls no punches when it comes to mistakes she felt were made and which set the 507th up for failure and neither does she cut the Army any slack for the way herself and other POWs were treated once they returned to Fort Bliss.

Johnson includes some great photos in this book, which really adds to the telling. The format of the book, in which the narrative continues to alternate between the "present" and the past, is one that I personally find annoying under normal circumstances but in this case it works perfectly. Indeed, I'm not sure this story would work any other way. I think this is destined to be a classic of the Second Gulf War.

5 out of 5 stars A harrowing account of capture, release, and the post-traumatic stress that resulted   May 14, 2010
Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA)
I'M STILL STANDING: FROM CAPTIVE U.S. SOLDIER TO FREE CITIZEN - MY JOURNEY HOME tells of the 2003 story of soldier Shoshana Johnson, wounded and captured in the ambush of An-Nasiriyah en route to Baghdad. She became the first black female prisoner of war in U.S. history, and her experiences are documented in this harrowing account of capture, release, and the post-traumatic stress that resulted.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping, poignant story of an exceedingly brave female soldier   May 5, 2010

It took me a little while to decide to get this book. Am I glad I did. This book is so informative regarding this woman's terrifying experiences as a POW. She happens to be the niece of my friend's boyfriend. I have never met her but would love the opportunity. I greatly respect and admire her strength and wise ways in which she conducted herself under such unbearable duress. Had she boldly showed hostility and mouthed off to the enemy like some of the other prisoners she described, she probably would not be here today to enlighten us about her experience. I read this book in a flash because it was so interesting. I pray for Shoshanna to never have any more trauma comparable to this for the rest of her life. Her daughter is very fortunate to have this strong, intelligent, brave woman for her mother. You go Shoshanna!

5 out of 5 stars Honestly written   April 25, 2010

Well, I can't add much more to what already been written already. I concurred with most of the reviews and I have to say that this book proves to be honestly written, quite insightful in her experiences and clearly shows the bond of comradeship among soldiers lives on despite of sex and color. The author made sure that those who fought with valor were mentioned since their actions were often under reported. It is nice that although overshadowed by Jessica Lynch, the author holds no grudge or ill feeling. That in my books, that got my respects. I will wish her well. One of the more honest books to come out that war in recent period.
