These 132 letters, written from 1861 to 1863, chronologically follow Richard's service throughout the war: his voluntary enlistment; his service on a Union ferry; time spent in the "Union Coast Guard"; postings in Virginia and North Carolina; and his return home. A brief explanation introduces each group of letters. An introduction details the Goldwaites' lives before the war, and an epilogue tells of their life together afterwards. The text is illustrated with more than 40 photographs.

Love and War through Extraordinary Letters November 18, 2004
This is a tremendous book! It provides readers a tremendous insight into the lives of common people who struggled with day to day life during the Civil War. The book contains information into the hopes, dreams, disappointments, fears and joys during the most difficult period in the nation's history. You will have the opportunity to secretly follow the intimate conversations between an officer and his wife back home...evening reading about her secret trip to his position on the front line. From food, to weather, to clothing, to love...it is a wonderful read!
