Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
A brilliantly funny look at the tumultuous recent past from the Pulitzer Prizewinning humorist.

Remember when everything was going to go to hell when Y2K struck?

That didnt happen. Right?

But what did happen? To provide a little perspective on a really messed-up millennium (so far), the one and only Dave Barry slips into his historians robe (its plush terrycloth) and revisits the defining moments in our countrys recent historyfrom the Bush years tojeez, its still the Bush years! As an added bonus, Barry quicklywere busy heretosses in the complete history of the last millennium, covering crucial turning points such as the invention of the pizza by Leonardo da Vinci and the computer by Charles Babbage (who died in 1871 still waiting to talk to tech support).

Fellow Americans, the time has come to bone up with Barry as he puts the hysterical in history.

4 out of 5 stars Typically amusing Dave Barry book!   October 31, 2008
THis is a collection of Dave Barry's end-of-year roundup stories for his Florida newspaper. It's especially amusing if you remember (vaguely) most of the events he mocks, teases, winks at, and satirizes in classic Dave Barry ways. I found it very amusing and read thru it in no time. Like eating sherbert.

5 out of 5 stars Kept me laughing   October 30, 2008
This was a pleasure to read. He kept me laughing throughout the book. I especially liked the way he would unexpectedly make an allusion to some modern personality while writing about a historical event or person. To appreciate Barry's humor, one has to have a basic knowledge of history and current events.

3 out of 5 stars Not as Good as Barry's Other Work, and Ludicrous That 2001 isn't Covered at All!   October 11, 2008
Unlike his fiction novels which are all brilliant Dave Barry's non fiction books do vary in quality. Most are great but some seem to be filling contract obligations with not much effort put in. History of the Millennium (So Far) is one of those weaker efforts.

For starters 2001 is not covered at all (technically the starting year of the millennium). Ridiculous! How can you have a history of the Millennium without the most media covered year of the human race's history to date included. Even if Barry didn't want to comment on the terrorist attacks, there was a heap of other stuff that happened in 2001. But why not include stuff on the terrorist attacks, when Barry has written and published elsewhere stuff on them? This doesn't make any sense, plus there's plenty of other wars, terrorist attacks and unfunny events which are covered in the years included so why not the September 11 events?

The stuff covered in the other years is very American politics heavily weighted, which is not the most interesting of subject matters. You'd think there was more interesting stuff happening around the world to cover than so much politics. As well the history of the previous millennium was pretty average writing but there were a few gems such as January 1, 1000 "marked by feasting, dancing and the public beheading of a whiny, tedious group of people who would not stop insisting that technically, the new millennium did not begin until January 1, 1001".

If this is your first Dave Barry experience, don't be put off. Dave Barry's non fiction work is mostly high quality. His adult fiction novels Tricky Business and Big Trouble are brilliant! Even his children's novels such as Peter and the Starcatchers shouldn't be missed either.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Freaking Hilarious   July 24, 2008

With Dave Barry I admit I do laugh out loud quite often and this book is no exception. Granted I had not read this year in review columns for these past few years so I don't know if these were just rehashes of what was printed there but honestly they were all just so funny that I read through this book in record time.

5 out of 5 stars 208 chuckles   April 3, 2008

Funny and original on every page. Dave Barry is one of a very few comedy writers who can jab at both sides of the political aisle without malice and keep everyone laughing. This is the perfect book to take to the DMV, dentist or airport. Any place you need a quick laugh or a lighter perspective.
