Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Over the course of ten previous novels, Daniel Silva has established himself as one of the world’s finest writers of international intrigue and espionage— “a worthy successor to such legends as Frederick Forsyth and John le Carre” (Chicago Sun-Times)—and Gabriel Allon as “one of the most intriguing heroes of any thriller series” (The Philadelphia Inquirer).

Now the death of a journalist leads Allon to Russia, where he finds that, in terms of spycraft, even he has something to learn. He’s playing by Moscow rules now.

It is not the grim, gray Moscow of Soviet times but a new Moscow, awash in oil wealth and choked with bulletproof Bentleys. A Moscow where power resides once more behind the walls of the Kremlin and where critics of the ruling class are ruthlessly silenced. A Moscow where a new generation of Stalinists is plotting to reclaim an empire lost and to challenge the global dominance of its old enemy, the United States.
One such man is Ivan Kharkov, a former KGB colonel who built a global investment empire on the rubble of the Soviet Union. Hidden within that empire, however, is a more lucrative and deadly business. Kharkov is an arms dealer—and he is about to deliver Russia’s most sophisticated weapons to al-Qaeda. Unless Allon can learn the time and place of the delivery, the world will see the deadliest terror attacks since 9/11—and the clock is ticking fast.

Filled with rich prose and breathtaking turns of plot, Moscow Rules is at once superior entertainment and a searing cautionary tale about the new threats rising to the East—and Silva’s finest novel yet.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant again, great insight into Russia   November 21, 2008
Great book. Silva does it again. I felt as though I took a tour with Gabriel through Russia and Italy. The details of Europe is what makes Silva so brilliant for me. I can really "see" what he's seeing.
Fantastic story that follow the same script as in the past books but as in the others, enough change up and redirection and continued build up of characters to keep you interested. He introduces us to the new Russia which makes me a little more than concerned. Great insight.
I am a big fan of Silva it grows with each book.

4 out of 5 stars Cross Country Drive   November 19, 2008
I've either read or listened to all of Silva's novels. Have always enjoyed Gabriel Allon. This did not disapoint me. A fun start right off the bat! The reader was excellent and kept me alert and interested! It might be a good point to give Mr. Allon a rest and try something new. The formula is close to getting stale; not yet, but close.

5 out of 5 stars A penetrating look at the new Russia   November 8, 2008
Daniel Silva has become my favorite author in the thriller genera, and MOSCOW RULES is another winner.

Silva tosses Gabriel Allon into the boiling caldron of current world events--this time Putin's Russia. Allon must counter a sinister al-Qaeda plot to kill thousands of Westerners. but first, al-Qaeda must obtain a quantity of SA-18 missiles. The source of the shoulder launched Russian anti-aircraft missiles is Ivan Kharkov, a Russian oligarch and world class arms merchant.

Allon is in an Italian villa, happily restoring a masterpiece for the Vatican, when a building crisis causes his superior to recall him to help solve the murder of a Russian journalists. Silvia, takes his protagonists into the decadent capital of the new Russia, Moscow, and its wantabe Tsar, Putin.

MOSCOW RULES is a complex thriller, hard to put down--even for another cup of coffee. Tension builds as Allon unravels Kharkov's sinister plot. Silva takes the reader on a tour of Moscow that would never be approved by the Russian government. He also paints a picture of the new Russia that leaves no doubt about the Bear's ambitions, and that a new Cold Wars in coming.

Lee Boyland, author of two award winning techno-thrillers dealing with current events, Islamic terrorists and WMDs: The Rings of Allah and Behold, an Ashen Horse.

5 out of 5 stars Gabriel in Moscow   October 29, 2008
Mercedes, BMWs, Volvos, high speed bullet bikes, in Moscow; a new generation of wealth from exports of natural resources oil, steel, nickel, and commodities.

Gabriel action days seem to be coming to an end. He suffers a broken eye orbit and potential loss of sight from a damaged retina.

The books reveals the merciless action of death in Moscow of free reporting reporters. Suppression of the truth by two reporter murders has brought the attention of the Israeli intelligence. The arrows of Allah is funneling arms sales through Ivan Kharikov, a sell out move, Al Queda weapons acquistion, through Africa, and potential threat to US and Israel.

Elan, Ivan's wife, decides, she must stop her monsterous husband from kill more innocents. Gabriel designs plans too recruit Elan, manipulate an English Art dealer, professional deal with Sarah Crawford (who expressed her love for Gabriel in a moment to tension and enraged Chiara), and masterfully create a replica of "Two children on the Beach". Gabriel uses the desired painting too gain an opportunity to talk with Elena under the interrogating nature of Ivan. Ivan allows Elena to buy art because he has millions from weapons sales, prestige and power among the New Moscow, and a mansion whereby to house the art.

Ivan has weakness. Ivan is having an affair with 19 year old Moscow super model. Gabriel exploited the information to get Elena to help him obtain Ivans secret papers that will reveal the transaction locations.

Revenge and injury will be the excuse to keep Elana alive and allower her and the children to escape for Ivan.

Elana must get secret papers documenting the weapons transactions, but no plan is perfect and things go wrong. Gabriel is order by Shammron to abandon the operation, but Gabriel disobeys in an attempt to save Elena. FSB saves Gabriel and allows him to kill a number of Ivan's men.

Gabriel gets tortured twice, saves Elana and the children, stops a terrorist attack on US soil, and returns to Israel to resume his honeymoon with Chiara.

The books illustrates the Western transformation in Moscow and the lawless nature of the Russian environment and culture: bribery, softline communist, report deathes, and wealth oligarchy accumulation at the hand of organized crime.

Shocking images of socialized property structures with small cities living like rats in the structures.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent read   October 26, 2008
This is the first Daniel Silva book I have read and I found it to be an entertaining pageturner which kept me wanting more. It is well-written and good entertainment. I gave it 4 stars and not 5 stars because it could have been better, but it was overall a very good, well researched story that I enjoyed. Garbriel Allon is a complex well crafted character who is superior to many other writer's heros in this genre which tend to be wooden and very simple. This is definitely a thinking persons thriller in the the direction of Le Carre.
