Books by politicians are not often worth reading, but John McCain's Faith of My Fathers is an astonishing exception to the rule. The Republican senator from Arizona has a remarkable story to tell--better than just about any of his peers--and he tells it well, with crisp prose and an unexpected sense for narrative pacing. The first half of the book concerns his naval forbears: his grandfather commanded an aircraft carrier in the Second World War, while his father presided over all naval forces in the Pacific during the Vietnam War. They were the first father-son admirals in American history. Young John McCain knew he had enormous shoes to fill and rebelled against many of the expectations set for him. At the Naval Academy, he was nearly expelled, graduating fifth from the bottom of his class. He never became an admiral, but achieved fame another way: as a naval aviator in 1967, he was shot down over North Vietnam and spent several years in POW camps, where he was beaten, tortured, and nearly allowed to die. McCain describes the awful details of his imprisonment and tells how he stayed mentally strong during seemingly endless months of solitary confinement and how he communicated in code with fellow captives. Faith of My Fathers concludes with McCain's release and contains no information about his subsequent political career. It is, nonetheless, a complete and compelling memoir of individual heroism--one that will interest both political and military history buffs. --John J. Miller

Excellent book by John McCain. Gave an insight into the "man" John McCain. Brought back fond memories of my life in the military, as I am US Army Retired. Was in audience with Admiral McCain when he was CINCPAC, and his son was a POW in Hanoi.

It is a timely and excellent item, for a not so excellent time.
This should be required reading in schools along with the bios of the leaders who formed our country. Today's leaders have much to teach by example, also.
 Measure of the Man October 11, 2008
Honor and duty, bravado and pluck, independence and irreverence - these not only define John McCain, but have apparently been passed down through the generations that preceded him. This contemporary memoir almost seems to be from another time, when deeds and valor exemplified leadership much more than speechmaking or image-polishing.
His personal history provides a glimpse into how military families think and operate, reflecting both the call to serve and the embrace of adventure that have typified the warrior class throughout the ages. The senator shares instructive snapshots, warts and all, allowing the reader to clearly see what he stands for and what has shaped him. You need not agree with McCain's politics to appreciate and admire what he and his family have contributed to our country.

Everyone should read this fascinating inside look at John McCain. He does not hold back with his past and helps us see where he comes from today. Especially his quick temper and his refusal to go along with the majority. He has a long history of being a trouble maker just for the fun of it! His "Oh, Well" and "but it was all in good fun" attitude got him in plenty of hot water with his superiors. He owes a great deal of gratitude to his grandfather and father for excusing his behavior. This was his way of coping with prison. Unfortunately the American People are not the enemy now! This book helped explain some of the decisions he makes and is now making at the close of this election!
Faith of My Fathers October 7, 2008
With the current political race between McCain and Obama I wanted to read as much as possible about each candidate. I enjoyed the McCain book very much and was impressed by his fascinating military background.
