The Foundations of Magical Training November 22, 2008 W.E. Butler was one one of the most significant writiers on magical training of the 20th century. He was also one of the most modest! His three books on this subject: Magic: Its Ritual, Power and Purpose; The Magician:His Training & Work, and ;Apprenticed to Magic, provide an essential and important foundational course of instruction not only for the sincere seeker but also for experienced initiates. The're simply are no other books that cover these subjects in its depth and breath. They are must haves!! -- Paul A. Clark, author of the Broken Seal and Steward of the Fraternity of the Hidden Light
Lady Aeris is correct January 31, 2005 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
The previous reviewer, Lady aeris, is totally correct. This is a book about Hermetic Magic and is not about Wicca. While there are similarities between the 2 disciplines, they are not the same. The book is useful, as is one of Butlers other books, The Magician:His Training and Work.If you are interested in Hermeticism you will enjoy and be interested in both of these works.Butler was a real initiate.
Far from flaky September 20, 2004 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
W.E.Butler is far from a flake, he was a devoted friend and colleague of the celebrated occultist Dion Fortune, he was among those who helped build the Society of the Inner Light into the foremost Mystery School of its day, then he went on to found his own school, the Servants of the Light, which still continues under the guidance of Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki.
Apprenticed to Magic is written as the authors responses to the questions of a student. Butler assigns helpful exercises, encourages you through the plateaus that we often experience during the learning process and in the end encourages you to go out and find others of a like mind.
This book is not about Wicca, though many of the principles could be used by those following a Wiccan path. The topics covered include: the Tree of Life, creating thought forms, astral projection and elemental teachings about ritual and ceremonial.
hmmm.... February 6, 2004 0 out of 34 found this review helpful
I'll make this quick: if you must get a how-to book about magic, get Wicca: a Guide for the Solitary Practioner by Scott Cunningham and go from your heart thereafter. True magic comes from within. And do you REALLY want to astrally project? come on. Isn't dreaming while sleeping enough? Trust your heart, trust your dreams, and you won't need this flaky book.
