Why is this being given out by the millitary? June 1, 2006 0 out of 11 found this review helpful
Do they not trust its audience will find it any other way? I know i'm not the target audience but Seperation of Church and State is LAW people... Law as in the Constitution? Anyway since soldiers are being forced to read this childlike drivel I'll go ahead and respond... There is a reason soldiers of a certain ilk are stereotyped as being hot tempered neanderthals just ripe for the picking of pay day check advance places and other charlatans, and it's books like these. I have worked hard to break those down by educating friends and actually talking about issues and most of all alerting them to benefits and rights. As for the book, litterally if I woke up one day, thought to myself "hmm I want to make a swift boat full of cash, lets target christians...", I could write it in an afternoon. Full of all kinds of tripe cliches and bible refrences that that yours truly (who had bible study classes everyday of my elementary and high school education, and believe me i paid attention unlike most my class, but I don't blame them either) wouldn't include in a first communion card to a 10 year old. Hate to tell you Colonel but if you worship the Jesus I know, you can't HELP but share empathy with humans on a one by one basis. You MUST have the argument within yourself that if you truly love your neighbor as yourself, and strive to treat others as you shall have them treat you, (the golden rules, i beleive?) this would logically cause a problem for you when you're asked to put a bullet in them, blow them up, cut their children off from aid, and so on and so on... To deny this makes one a liar or a moron, neither of which i want fighting with me... Which way I fall on these issues is a decision i make on a one by one basis, (situation vs common good) but if O'Leary wants us to leave it up to God and the DoD, I strongly disagree and demand a cut of the action. It is not Rumsfeld that will have to answer for my sins and conscience, it is I, and I assume dignity and struggle for human rights will be pretty high on the list of virtues. I think there a special place in heaven for the soldier or civillian who put a stop to the Abu Ghraib atrocity. I know there is a special place in hell for anyone who thinks torture should be a U.S. sponsered activity. This book says faith is the only way to survive in the battlefield, I believe facts and survival instinct (i.e. a sharp questioning mind) are God given blessings. I'm not surprised such childlike sentiments are found in a christian book like this, the christian book industry is rotten on the inside from this kind of swill and has been as long as i remember. I'm just saddened this is being given out at army sponsered events. Not shocked tho, It's lazy and took no imagination. Very much what I've come to expect from the DoD lately...
High Ground, Holy Ground. February 28, 2003 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Upon finishing the book,I felt like I was standing on holy ground, not just high ground. The book abounds in sensitive and moving stories of love and courage from people with integrity, patriotism, and faith that has gone through the fire--ordinary people reflecting upon the gracious Creator, the one and only God.
An Outstanding Book November 13, 2001 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
There is just so much you could say about this book. For one Colonel Jeffrey O'Leary is an outstanding author. Even though he himself didn't write much of this book it took a great deal of research to come up with what he has written here. Before each chapter he has a list of quotes. Those quote are from all different kinds of people. It just goes to show that many different people have their faith in the one and only true God. The stories that are in here are all different. Some will make you want to cry other will make you laugh. Once I started I just couldn't stop reading. I hated it when I had to put it down and do something else. In my opinion it is such a good book that I am buying as many as I can and giving them out as Christmas gifts to the family and friends. Even to a non believer this would be a good book. It show that through the toughest times people held onto what they believed in and God pulled them through when there was no way that they could have made it without him there by their sides. I can't say much more without ruining the book for you. I would like to tell you about some of the stories but they are too good to tell them now. I will have to let you decide for yourself how good the book really is. I hope you enjoy it and that this review was helpfull to you.
Hope for a Hurting Nation October 3, 2001 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
This book was so inspirational. The timing couldn't have been better after the disasters of Sept 11. The book really encouraged me as I read story after story of courageous men and women who had suffered but survived their ordeals. It will appeal to women as well as men. I highly recommend it for an uplift in your day
For Such a Time as This October 3, 2001 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Col O'Leary has written an epic book of military life seen in all it's hardship and promise. It is a book of hope and possibility, of love in the middle of war. It is a book written for such a time as this---when our nation needs to recover from the wounds of terrorism and the fear that it can bring. It's hard to imagine anyone who wouldn't appreciate hearing that even in our worst circumstances, God is still working--and here are incredible examples of how He did.
