Product Description . The period from 1861-1865 proved to be one of the greatest periods of trial and suffering in our nations history. A significant lapse of time had passed since America had engaged in the horrors of war. After the war of 1812, little memory remained of the fact that war could be “hell.” A veteran of the war with Mexico, General “Stonewall” Jackson wrote to his wife and said, “People who are anxious to bring on war don’t know what they are bargaining for; they don’t see all the horrors that must accompany such an event.”

Great Gift May 25, 2008 What a great gift for a civil war buff! I purchased this book as a gift for my nephew but ended up reading much of it myself. I enjoyed the mix of letters, personal accounts, and stories from the war that the author used to illustrate Biblical and moral truths.

I highly recommend this book. As a Christian, as an American, as a history lover, and book lover....this book covers a lot.
A double shot book -- Christian and War Between the States related. January 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
To anyone of the Christian persuasion who also is a civil war devotee, Rev. Terry Tuley's excellent devotional book is a sheer joy. Mining the fields of various university archives as well as normal resource avenues, Mr. Tuley has extracted interesting and moving stories and experiences of the men and women connected with the civil war, as well as the slaves affected by it. He brings to each an obvious correlation with one's life today, and juxtaposes the feelings of those men from long ago with our normal lives today, each one bolstered by a relevant verse and thought from the Bible. While his ministerial impact is obvious, his ability to write a good story and to properly insert source material makes this devotional book far from ordinary. It should be on the book shelf of every civil war addict!
Worthwhile Devotional September 13, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a well written devotional that I look forward to reading every day. It makes me realize that worshiping the Lord and reading his Word is just as important today as it was in the 1860's
