Great desktop dictionary July 28, 2008 Very useful definitions and a great display of common usage in a proper sentence. Great design and layout of the text and cover.
What pronunciation for Spanish words??? July 27, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This dictionary does have an enormous vocabulary, verb tenses and other nuances of the Spanish language...which is great.
WHAT IT DOES NOT CONTAIN IS A SYSTEM OF PRONUNCIATION FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL SPANISH WORD. It does give the information for pronouncing the English words which was little use for me as a native speaker of the English language.
I am just learning Spanish and need a dictionary which tells me how to pronounce the Spanish words. This does not.
LaRousse or Oxford ? May 27, 2008 After using La Rousse for a long time i recommend Oxford without hesitation. Almost all words I could not find in Larousse I found here. Plus the arrangement is far superior. Also the absence of stupid letter cut-offs in Oxford is pleasing and choice of the type of paper is excellent. Unlike in Larousse the rendering of vulgarisms is much more tasteful without causing nausea with the preserved accuracy. Who knows LaRousse knows what I am talking about. Like in La Rousse I wonder why the editors do not separate English and Spanish part into two separate volumes and so make the usage of this large dictionary more convenient.
Excellent refence for Spanish-English study May 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this for my wife who is an ESL assistant at an elementary school. She is constantly studying Spanish grammar and words to improve her vocabulary and to perform translations for the school principal and teachers. Also she hears a lot of Spanish words from the children from Mexico and central America that are not commonly taught in classes (idioms, slang expressions, etc.).
The Oxford Spanish Dictionary is the most complete one we could find and my wife is very happy with it.
A standard reference dictionary May 15, 2008 If you wish to learn Spanish or English, and already speak English or Spanish as a first language, you will need a good English/Spanish dictionary. The Oxford Spanish Dictionary offers exactly the kind of information needed in a clear format and at an excellent price. Most entries--whether in the Spanish-to-English section or the English-to-Spanish section--provide numerous examples of the words in which you may be interested, in different contexts differentiating the nuances of meaning and indicating suitable word selections very handily. In this volume, as would be expected, the Oxford University Press lives up to its excellent reputation.
