One of the world’s foremost authorities on the subject of suicide terrorism, the esteemed political scientist Robert Pape has created the first comprehensive database of every suicide terrorist attack in the world from 1980 until today. In Dying to Win, Pape provides a groundbreaking demographic profile of modern suicide terrorist attackers–and his findings offer a powerful counterpoint to what we now accept as conventional wisdom on the topic. He also examines the early practitioners of this guerrilla tactic, including the ancient Jewish Zealots, who in A.D. 66 wished to liberate themselves from Roman occupation; the Ismaili Assassins, a Shi’ite Muslim sect in northern Iran in the eleventh and twelfth centuries; World War II’s Japanese kamikaze pilots, three thousand of whom crashed into U.S. naval vessels; and the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, a secular, Marxist-Leninist organization responsible for more suicide terrorist attacks than any other group in history.
Dying to Win is a startling work of analysis grounded in fact, not politics, that recommends concrete ways for states to fight and prevent terrorist attacks now. Transcending speculation with systematic scholarship, this is one of the most important studies of the terrorist threat to the United States and its allies since 9/11.
“Invaluable . . . gives Americans an urgently needed basis for devising a strategy to defeat Osama bin Laden and other Islamist militants.” –Michael Scheuer, author of Imperial Hubris
“Provocative . . . Pape wants to change the way you think about suicide bombings and explain why they are on the rise.” –Henry Schuster, CNN.com
“Enlightening . . . sheds interesting light on a phenomenon often mistakenly believed to be restricted to the Middle East.” –The Washington Post Book World
“Brilliant.” –Peter Bergen, author of Holy War, Inc.

All Americans should read this... June 17, 2008 ...as it gives a much needed analysis as to the real reason for suicide terrorism. The Author did a wondrous job collecting data to support his theory.
Just a MAGNIFICENT work.
A great book to read. If you are ready for the naked truth and not prejudiset May 27, 2008 This book is a must read. An eye opener! A review would not do it. You should read it...
Not Worth The Time To Read May 1, 2008 0 out of 7 found this review helpful
This book was obviously written to fit a preconceived and politically biased notion. Filled with one contradiction after the other, and often in the same sentence. I personally found this book not worth the time it took to read it.
Death Commanders February 17, 2008 0 out of 12 found this review helpful
Since the invention of the dynamite, the ruthless and reckless tyrants have been using the human soul for death missions.
It is not the oppression, but the ego of the leader that wastes human lives on death missions.
Since Ferenc Deak 1803-1876, it is clear that independence and freedom depends on ending the internal oppression and exploitation.
The death missions will not lead to victory, as seen in Japan, Gaza, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, only extend the misery there.
Inform, enlighten and resist. Death missions are good business for funeral homes, only.
the best book for understanding suicide terrorism February 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
i wrote one of the highlight reviews for this book when it first came out. it is a statistical study of all suicide terrorism from 1983 to 2003 and pape reaches excellent conclusions. this is not some security geek trying to explain islam... it is the real deal. i have read most books on this subject and nothing else compares.
